Aldo Rall: Wicked Wisdom
In this Wicked & Agile Interview, I had the chance to speak with consultant and agility coach, Aldo Rall, who volunteered during COVID lockdowns and mandates to support a group of teachers. With the teachers being recently unemployed, Aldo helped them charter a new community offering tutoring to children in remote settings.
During our interview, Aldo talked about taking action and how to help people who are distracted, distraught, and stressed. This was a scary topic for me, personally: how to be with the public when they are distracted, distraught or distressed, when logic is pushed to the side and we are dealing with someone who has been triggered into a flight, freeze, or fight trigger.
He gives some tips on how to bring someone back including:
1) Ask a powerful question that gets them into their analytical mind – it’s even more potent if it brings them to the present moment and thinking about something they will be doing next.
2) Remind them of the goal and actions they are planning on taking and/or:
3) Bring them to something that visualizes where they are going next. (He used Miro to keep them focused on what to do next.)
We may not see a lot of this in the corporate world, but I would expect we will see this more often as more tension is brought into the workplace. I feel better knowing that I am more prepared for these situations.
Aldo also reminded me that anyone can take action – even if it is picking up a broom to sweep as Mother Teresa is so renowned for. Actions speak louder than words.
